A B2B Catalog Built to Be Read by AI From Day One
Jump to section›

Most B2B stores find out they're invisible to AI agents the expensive way. A buyer asks ChatGPT who supplies a category wholesale, the agent names three competitors, and the store that actually stocks the widest range isn't one of them. Then the retrofit starts: finding every empty guest category, every missing piece of structured data, every place the catalog told a machine nothing.

There's a cheaper version. Build the store so an agent can read it from the first day it's live.

#What "agent-visible" actually means for B2B

An AI shopping agent shows up the way a brand-new visitor does: logged out, no account, in no customer group. On a lot of B2B builds that means it hits a login wall, an empty category, or one retail price that isn't what your buyers pay. The agent can only recommend what it can read, so it reads nothing and moves on.

Agent-visible means the logged-out layer carries three true signals even though the pricing stays gated:

  • the product exists, with a name and category a machine can parse
  • you are an authorized seller of it, stated in structured data, not just implied by a logo
  • there's a door to the real price, a trade or wholesale account, rather than a blank where a number should be

None of that publishes your wholesale pricing. It just stops leaving silence where an agent expects a signal.

#Built in, not bolted on

We ran this as the default on a B2B distributor we build and operate, Oroca, rather than a fix applied later. From the first day the catalog was live, the guest-readable pages rendered real content, the entity and seller-authority signals were in the structured data, and the category pages said what the business sells and who it sells to. There was no period where the store existed but the agents couldn't see it, because the readable layer shipped with the store.

#The number that came out of it

Measured weekly across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode on the same set of category buyer prompts, Oroca went from 0 to 45.0% share of voice in its category. That's the outright number one of six named competitors, more than the next three combined, with the brand named in roughly 82% of category answers. The point isn't the size of the number. It's that the climb started from a store that was readable on day one, so the share of voice accumulated instead of being clawed back after a retrofit.

#What this means if you're already live

If your B2B store is already in production, you don't get the day-one version, but the signals are the same. The work is finding where the guest layer goes silent and giving it something true to read, which is what the companion pieces below walk through for Magento specifically. The lesson from building it in from the start is simpler: an agent is now one of your readers, and a catalog that was only ever written for logged-in humans is a catalog that reader can't use.

Frequently asked
Do you have to publish wholesale pricing to be AI-visible?›
No. An agent doesn't need your gated prices. It needs to read that the product exists, that you're an authorized seller of it, and that there's a door to a trade account. The price stays behind login; the fact that you sell it stops being a secret.
Is building agent-visible from day one different from retrofitting?›
Mostly in cost and completeness. Retrofitting means finding every gap an agent already fell through — empty guest categories, missing structured data, split authority across domains. Building it in from day one means the guest-readable layer, the entity signals, and the catalog structure are correct before the first agent ever arrives, so there's no climb back from zero.
What is share of voice for AI answers?›
The share of category answers from assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode in which your brand is named, measured against competitors on the same set of buyer prompts. It's a visibility metric, not a ranking one — it tracks whether the engine says your name when a buyer asks the category question.
